MEET

James Kevin Chaney

Kevin has 28 years of law enforcement experience in Camden County and the State of Georgia. Kevin and his family moved here in 1980 and is a second-generation law enforcement and U.S. Army veteran. Witnessing his family's passion for public service led him to his calling in law enforcement. Kevin’s father (Roy Chaney) is a Vietnam Army veteran, was a Deputy Sheriff in Grady County, Georgia in the 1970’s and a longtime Athletic Coordinator for both City of Kingsland and Camden County Government.

Kevin enjoys the close-knit community of Camden County and enjoys being involved with them. He loves the Camden County Wildcats and Georgia Bulldogs Football teams and is a supporter of the Camden QB Club. His community activities include working with Boy Scouts of America, supporting different 5k races held every year in Camden County. He is a supporter of the Georgia Sheriff’s Association, Peace Officer Annuity and Benefits (POAG), Police Benevolent Association (PBA), and One Blood.

FAMILY

Kevin and Rebecca were married on March 25, 2000 at the Burnt Fort Church. They are the proud parents of two sons, Jackson 19 and Cooper 16. The family enjoys camping and family trips. Recently, the family enjoyed a road trip to Yellowstone and Mount Rushmore. Kevin said, "The best part of the 15 day trip was simply spending time together as a family without all the distractions of life. We enjoyed talking about what we had seen and where we are going next. It is a memory we will all share for a lifetime."

EDUCATION

Kevin is a Camden County High School graduate (class of 1991). After high school, he enlisted in the Army, assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. Kevin graduated with honors from Columbia Southern University, earning a degree in criminal justice and is a member of the National Honor Society. Kevin is currently a Georgia P.O.S.T. state-certified General Instructor, as well as Firearms, Defensive Tactics, Active Threat, Less Lethal, Tactical Team, and possess numerous other state and federal certifications.

CAREER

He began his career in law enforcement in 1995, with the Camden County Sheriff’s Office where he worked as a Jailor, Patrol Deputy, 911 Dispatcher, and Criminal Investigator. From 1997 through 2002, Kevin served as a liaison with the Drug Enforcement Administration, living in Savannah, Georgia. Captain Chaney rose to the rank of Major at the Camden County Sheriff's Office in 2022 before his departure in October of 2023.

FAITH

Kevin is a Christian and grew up in Church, attending children’s church at a young age with his mother in Kingsland. He was baptized when stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina while serving his country. As with most important decisions in his life, he prayed about the decision to run for Sheriff and believes strongly "this is what I am intended to do".

Truly great leaders have the capacity to reach into the future and mold their visions into a reality. They deeply understand their internal values.

— Chris Duffin, Author

"If elected, I look forward to working with you and for you as Sheriff of Camden County, Georgia. The Sheriff’s Office is a fascinating place to work and quite frankly it’s one of my favorite places. I promise to work diligently to challenge our employees to achieve their potential and provide the utmost services to the citizens of Camden County. Myself and staff must work to maintain open lines of communication with all employees and citizens to ensure the success of the Sheriff’s Office."

- James Kevin Chaney

What are your biggest concerns facing the Sheriff's Office?

Health and wellness of all employees
Responsible Leadership
Use of Force incidents
Aging Facilities
Recruitment & retention / morale
Budget (fleet & equipment) (rising inflation)

Inmate Violence
It is very clear to me and anyone else that has seen all the beatings inside the Sheriff's Office, this is a serious problem.
Starting day one, I plan to update and enforce the Use of Force Policy. This policy will focus on preventing the type of abuses we have all seen. Violation of any Sheriff's Office Policy will be reason for discipline up to and including termination.
The policy will include:
* Continuous De-escalation tactics training.
* Continuous Use of Force training on tasers and shields defense.
* Establish a Use Of Force review panel to evaluate every UOF incident and use the results as both a training guide with officers and Investigation of the event.
* Create a public steering committee to include members of the public to engage on all activities at the Sheriff's Office including the Use of Force Incidents.

Focusing On What Matters Most

Four concepts I trust and believe in:

Leadership, Transparency, Accountability, and Community Engagement.

Leadership: ability to motivate and collaborate with people that helps them deliver a vision and goals.

  • It starts with communication
  • Know your people - a good leader knows his / her team and what motivates them
  • Diplomacy – working with county government and other local leaders to achieve what’s best for Camden County citizens and visitors
  • Seeking out feedback - active listening allows a way deputies and citizens can provide responses to help with a solution

Transparency: Share information and communicate engagement efforts that builds trust with the public and within our community.
  • It’s simple, Trust is impossible where information is hidden and communities are stronger where trust prevails.
  • Establish an employee complaint system
  • Look into an advisory board for policy reviews
  • Uphold a 5-step discipline procedure

Accountability: Take responsibility for both performance and outcomes. Take full ownership when something goes wrong.
  • Be proactive rather than reactive (provide info to the citizens)
  • Create solutions through evaluations
  • Accept criticism
  • Set clear expectations through policy and procedures
  • Have a willingness to learn from citizens feedback
  • Be sincere and accountable to the citizens

Community Engagement: Interactions between our community and local leaders.
  • Give our community a sense of purpose (this is their agency - help us make our community safe)
  • Encourage different channels of engagements (different leaders, different ways to approach issues)
  • Builds trust (see our point of view from situations)
  • Establish crime analysis mapping for public view
